Insulated vs Uninsulated Garage Door: Does It Matter?
An insulated garage door is worth the extra cost when the garage is attached to living space, has a room above it, or is used as a workshop. For a detached garage you only park in, it is not. Insulated doors cost roughly $300 to $800 more than the equivalent uninsulated door and typically run R-12 to R-18.
What R-value means
R-value measures resistance to heat flow. Higher is better.

The construction matters as much as the number. A polystyrene insert is a foam board slotted into the section. Polyurethane is injected and expands to bond the two steel skins together, which is why those doors are both better insulated and considerably stiffer.
Be careful with advertised numbers. Some manufacturers quote the R-value of the insulation material rather than of the finished door assembly.
When it is worth it
Attached garage with living space above or beside it. Yes. The garage door is usually the largest uninsulated surface in that whole assembly.
Garage used as a workshop, gym or storage for anything temperature sensitive. Yes.
Attached garage, nothing above, nothing sensitive inside. Marginal, and the quieter operation is arguably the better reason.
Detached garage you park in. No. Spend the money on a better gauge of steel instead.
The two benefits people do not expect
It is quieter. A polyurethane sandwich door is much stiffer than a single skin one. It rattles less, it flexes less, and it transmits less street noise. In an under-house garage in Bay Ridge or Marine Park this is genuinely noticeable.
It dents less. The same stiffness that makes it quiet makes it more resistant to knocks. On a door that gets used daily by a family, that matters more than the R-value does.

The spring, which people forget
An insulated door is heavier than an uninsulated one of the same size, sometimes by fifty pounds or more.
Spring size is set by door weight. Reusing the old spring on a heavier new door leaves it permanently out of balance, which makes the door hard to lift by hand and quietly destroys the opener over the following couple of years.
A correctly sized spring is part of a proper installation. If a quote for a new insulated door does not mention the springs, ask.
The rest of the envelope
An insulated door on a garage with an unsealed side door, gaps around the frame and no bottom seal is not doing much.
If insulation is the goal, deal with the whole opening: intact bottom weather seal, perimeter stop moulding in good condition, and the door between the garage and the house properly sealed. That last one is often the biggest single leak and it is the cheapest to fix.
