Insulated vs Uninsulated Garage Door in Florida
In Florida an insulated garage door is worth it when the garage shares a wall or a floor with a bedroom or living space, holds the air handler or a freezer, or is used as a workshop. For a detached garage you only park in, it is not. Insulated doors cost roughly $300 to $800 more than the equivalent uninsulated door, inside the $950 to $3,000 range for an installed steel single, and the polyurethane construction is stiffer, quieter and often the one that carries the higher wind rating.
What R-value means
R-value measures resistance to heat flow. Higher is better. In Florida the heat is trying to get in, not out, but the number works the same way.

The construction matters as much as the number. A polystyrene insert is a foam board slotted into the section. Polyurethane is injected and expands to bond the two steel skins together, which is why those doors are both better insulated and considerably stiffer.
Be careful with advertised numbers. Some manufacturers quote the R-value of the insulation material rather than of the finished door assembly.

When it is worth it in Florida
The garage shares a wall with a bedroom. Yes. That is the layout of almost every single-story ranch from the 1950s to the 1990s, across Hialeah, Hollywood, Coral Springs, Brandon and Spring Hill. The garage is the hottest room in the house and that wall is the leak.
There is a bedroom or bonus room over the garage. Yes. That is the two-story layout in Weston, Wesley Chapel, Lake Nona and most builds after 2000. Heat rises through that floor all afternoon and the room above the garage is the one nobody wants in August.
The air handler or the water heater is in the garage. Yes, and this is the Florida specific reason. Many Florida homes put the air handler in the garage, and an air handler working in a 100°F room is doing more work than it should. Same for a freezer or a second refrigerator.
Garage used as a workshop, gym or storage for anything heat sensitive. Yes.
Attached garage, nothing beside or above, nothing sensitive inside. Marginal, and the quieter, stiffer door is the better reason.
Detached garage you park in. No. Spend the money on a thicker gauge and the rating instead.
The two benefits people do not expect
It is stiffer, and stiff is what a wind rating is built on. A polyurethane sandwich door is much stiffer than a single skin one. Manufacturers build many of their wind-rated and impact-rated doors on that construction, with struts added, because a rigid section resists pressure without flexing. This is the reason insulated and rated go together so often in Florida catalogs. It is quieter and it dents less. The same stiffness that carries the rating makes the door rattle less, flex less and transmit less street noise, and it shrugs off the knocks a family door takes. On a garage beside a bedroom this is genuinely noticeable, and on a builder grade 27 gauge door it is the difference between a dent at bumper height and no dent.

The premium is roughly $300 to $800 for the insulated version, depending on size and R-value. On a hurricane-rated door the comparison mostly disappears, because the rated construction is usually the sandwich construction anyway. The spring, which people forget
An insulated door is heavier than an uninsulated one of the same size, sometimes by fifty pounds or more. An insulated and impact-rated door is heavier again.
Spring size is set by door weight. Reusing the old spring on a heavier new door leaves it permanently out of balance, which makes the door hard to lift by hand when the power is out and quietly destroys the opener over the following couple of years.

The rest of the envelope
An insulated door on a garage with a torn bottom seal, gaps at the jambs and an unsealed door into the house is not doing much.
If heat is the goal, deal with the whole opening. The bottom seal takes water from the afternoon storms daily for half the year and it is usually the first thing to go; a new one is a small job on a tune-up at $85 to $160. The perimeter stop molding should be intact. And the door between the garage and the house should close on a proper seal, because that door is often the biggest single leak in the assembly and the cheapest to fix.
