A garage door is the largest opening in a Florida house and about a third of the front elevation, so it is a mechanical decision, a code decision and a curb appeal decision at once. The code decision is not optional. The Florida Building Code requires the door to be rated for the design wind pressure at the site, documented on the permit. In Miami-Dade and Broward that means a door with a Miami-Dade NOA; everywhere else a Florida Product Approval number. A wind-rated door resists pressure. Steel is the default for most homes: strongest value, available with a rating at every price point, and the insulated builds take the edge off a garage that otherwise hits 100°F in August. Aluminum and fiberglass resist salt on canal front and beach side homes in Cape Coral, Fort Lauderdale and Jupiter. Wood looks best and costs the most to keep against termites and humidity. The best time to replace is March to May, before the season starts on 1 June and before lead times stretch.
