Two things come up on Genie calls more than on other brands. The first is the screw drive rod running dry in summer heat, which wears the carriage and makes the unit grind. The second is remotes: older Genie models used a different code system from the LiftMaster family, which is the single most common source of confusion when someone buys a replacement remote from a hardware store. Matching the code system to the unit is what makes a remote work, not the brand on the box.

Usually not. The grease on the rod has thinned and run in the heat, and the plastic carriage is wearing on a dry rod. A carriage and a proper high-temperature lubrication is a $95 to $300 repair. If the motor itself is failing on a unit over twelve years old, replacement from $275 is the better spend.
