Garage Door Opening Slowly or Struggling
A garage door that opens slowly or struggles is almost always losing spring tension. The springs carry the weight and the opener only guides the door, so when springs weaken the opener starts lifting weight it was never designed to lift. Seized rollers, dry lubrication and cold weather make it worse.
The thirty second test
Close the door. Pull the manual release cord. Lift the door to waist height by hand and let go.
It stays put: the door is balanced. The problem is the opener.
It sinks slowly: the springs are losing tension.
It drops: the springs are effectively finished.
That one test separates the two categories, and it is the first thing any competent technician will do.
If the springs are tired
This is the usual answer. Springs lose tension gradually as they approach the end of their cycle life, and long before one snaps the door has become heavier than the opener expects.
What happens next, in order: the opener strains, then it starts tripping its force limit, then the gear kit strips, and eventually the spring breaks anyway.
Replacing the springs at the point where the door starts running slowly costs $170 to $400 per spring and prevents everything downstream of it.
If the door is balanced but still slow
Then it is friction or the opener.
Seized or dry rollers. Spin each one. They should turn freely. A roller that slides instead of rolling is dragging the door.
Dry hinges and bearings. Lubricate with a silicone or lithium spray. Not the track.
Track alignment. A track that has spread or bent adds resistance across the whole travel.
Opener force setting. Some openers let you set travel speed and force. A force setting that has drifted, or a unit whose motor is worn, gives you a slow door with no mechanical fault.
The opener itself. Capacitors weaken with age and a tired capacitor gives exactly this symptom: the motor runs, but with less torque than it used to have.

The order to spend money in
Springs first, then hardware, then the opener. Doing it the other way round is how people end up buying two openers in five years for a problem that was never the opener.

No, and it is an expensive way to find that out. If the door is heavy because the springs are tired, a new opener will simply wear out the same way the old one did. Fix the balance first.

Cold thickens the grease in the system and stiffens everything mechanically. A door that is marginal in October is struggling in January. It is also why springs break in winter.
Is it dangerous?
