What the cable does
Two steel cables run from the bottom brackets of the door up to drums on the torsion bar. When the spring unwinds, the drums wind the cables and lift the door. They carry the entire weight of the door, split between them, and on a 16 foot double door that is a lot of weight on two thin wound cables.

These are the numbers on our price list and they assume a standard residential door. A single door with light cables sits at the low end. A heavy insulated double or a wood door sits at the top, because the cable gauge and the drums are bigger.

This is where cable jobs get overcharged. If the cable came off the drum because the door hit something, or because it was left slack after a power outage and a hand lift, and the cable itself is undamaged, it can be re-seated and tensioned. That is an $85 to $140 job.

Why cables fail in Florida
Rust at the bottom bracket. The bracket sits at floor level. For half the year an afternoon storm puts water against the bottom seal every day, and the garage floor stays damp. Within a few miles of either coast the air carries salt as well. In Cape Coral, Fort Lauderdale east of US 1, Clearwater, Jupiter, Melbourne and Palm Coast, this is the single most common cause we see, and it is the most common visible warning of any failure on a Florida door. A scored drum. A drum with a rough groove saws through the cable from the inside. Replacing the cable without replacing the drum buys you a year at most, which is why the cable and drum job exists as a line on the price list.
Running out of balance. A door with a tired spring puts more load on the cables than they were sized for. Fixing the cable without fixing the spring is treating the symptom. Spring replacement is $150 to $350 per spring and we quote it separately so you can see both numbers.
Cycle count. Cables are a wear part with a life measured in the same cycles as the springs around them. Florida doors cycle hard because the garage is the storage room, the workshop and the second front door. In golf cart communities and the 55 plus developments around The Villages, Boynton Beach and Pembroke Pines, a door can cycle six or eight times a day, and cables age accordingly.
Storm pressure. After a named storm we see cables pulled off drums by a door that flexed inward under wind load. That is usually a storm damage assessment rather than a plain cable job, because the track and panels need checking too.
The warning signs
Look at the cable where it wraps the drum at the top of the track. Fraying there is the earliest sign, and it is what the photo at the top of this page shows. Near the bottom bracket, look for orange staining on the concrete, rust on the bracket bolts, and kinks in the cable.
A door that has started closing unevenly, with one side touching down before the other, is often telling you a cable has stretched or slipped. A door that makes a slapping sound on the way down often has a cable that is going slack on one side.

What the visit includes
A cable replacement is not just the cables. We release the spring tension, fit both cables, check the drums for scoring, check the bottom brackets for rust and replace them if they are corroded, re-tension the spring, and finish with a balance test with the opener disconnected. If the bottom brackets are rusted through they are replaced at the same time, because a new cable on a rotten bracket is a wasted visit.

Preventing the next one
Rinse the bottom of the door and the bottom brackets with fresh water every month or two if you live near the coast. Keep the bottom seal intact so the floor under the door stays as dry as it can. Have the door tuned up once a year, or twice near the coast, at $85 to $160; the cable check is part of the tune-up, and catching fraying at the drum a year early is the cheapest cable repair there is.
