Best Garage Door Material for a New York Home
For most New York homes, 24 gauge insulated steel is the right choice, installed from about $1,056. Near salt water, aluminum or fiberglass avoids the rust problem. Wood belongs on houses where the door is part of the elevation and where somebody will refinish it. Vinyl suits garages that take abuse.

Steel, and why it is usually the answer
Steel is cheapest for a given size, strong, dimensionally stable across the full New York temperature range, and available insulated. It needs essentially no maintenance beyond washing and touching up scratches.
Its weaknesses are denting and corrosion at any point where the finish is broken. The dent problem is solved by buying a thicker gauge; the corrosion problem is only a real issue near the water.
The coastal question
If you can smell the ocean, rust is your main enemy rather than dents.
Aluminum cannot rust and is light, which is easier on the springs and opener. It dents more easily than steel.
Fiberglass cannot rust either and takes a convincing wood grain. Its weakness is New York specific: fiberglass becomes brittle in hard cold and can crack on impact.
Either way, the hardware matters as much as the panel. Specify sealed-bearing nylon rollers and galvanised or stainless fixings, because those corrode long before the door does.
Wood, honestly
Nothing else looks right on a Scarsdale colonial, a Garden City carriage house or a Douglaston tudor. Wood is also the material most often sold without a full explanation.
It weighs considerably more than steel, so it needs a heavier spring, and it needs refinishing every two to four years or the bottom section starts absorbing water. A swollen bottom section on a custom door is expensive.
If you want the look without the commitment, a faux-wood steel or composite door gives you most of it. From the street the difference is usually invisible; up close on a genuinely historic elevation it is not.
Vinyl, the underrated one
Vinyl flexes rather than dents, does not rust, and needs no refinishing. On a working garage with children, bikes and equipment moving past the door, it is the most practical material available.
The trade-offs are limited colours, no repainting ever, and fewer styles. On a house where the door is part of the elevation, that rules it out.
Insulation, separately
Insulation is a choice you make on top of material, not instead of it.
Get it if the garage is attached, if there is a room above it, or if you use the garage for anything. Skip it on a detached garage you park in, and spend the money on a better gauge instead.

Does the quote include a spring sized for the new door?
If the new door weighs more than the old one, which an insulated door almost always does, reusing the old spring leaves it permanently out of balance. That makes the door hard to lift by hand and destroys the opener over a couple of years. A correct spring is part of a proper installation, not an extra.
