The four things that move a price
Door size. A double door is a bigger job than a single: more weight, more sections, usually two springs instead of one.
Door type and model. A wood or custom door weighs more and needs a different spring specification. Discontinued models mean parts availability has to be checked before anything can be promised.
Condition. A failure rarely happens alone. On a twenty year old door, the spring that snapped is surrounded by cables, drums, bearings and rollers of exactly the same age.
Access and timing. A garage on a shared alley, a steep driveway, or a call at ten at night all cost more to serve, and that should be stated up front rather than discovered on the invoice.
Repairs that should be cheap and are not
Two jobs get overcharged more than any others in this market.
Cable tension adjustment. If a cable has come off the drum but is not damaged, resetting and tensioning it is a $95 to $150 job. It is sometimes billed as a full cable replacement at three times that. Ask to see the cable.
Safety sensor alignment. A door that reverses immediately after closing is very often two misaligned photo eyes, which is a ten minute fix. It should not become an opener replacement.
What a bait quote looks like
The pattern is consistent and easy to spot once you know it. An advertised repair for $49, or a service charge of $29, gets a technician to your driveway. Once the door is apart, the quote becomes several hundred dollars of parts that all apparently need replacing at once.
The defence is simple: ask for the price of the finished repair, in writing, before anyone is dispatched. A company that will only quote on arrival has told you what kind of visit it plans to have.
What you should get for the money
Whatever you pay, the job should include a written estimate before work starts, the failed part shown to you rather than described, a balance test at the end with the opener disconnected, and a warranty on both parts and labor. Ours is one year on each.
Related questions
What is the most common garage door repair?
Torsion spring replacement, by a wide margin. Springs are the only part of a garage door with a defined service life measured in cycles, and every door eventually reaches it.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
Repair, almost always, when the sections themselves are sound. Replacement makes sense when panels are rusted through, when the model is discontinued and cannot be matched, or when the repair cost approaches half the price of a new door.
Why do garage door companies not publish prices?
Because a published price is a commitment and a number quoted in your driveway is not. It is also why searches for repair costs are dominated by directories rather than by garage door companies.
